2012 and the End of the World

Pt. Dave Kenney
2 Pet 3 : 1-18
1 This is my second letter to you, dear friends, and in both of them I have tried to stimulate your wholesome thinking and refresh your memory. 2 I want you to remember what the holy prophets said long ago and what our Lord and Savior commanded through your apostles.

3 Most importantly, I want to remind you that in the last days scoffers will come, mocking the truth and following their own desires. 4 They will say, “What happened to the promise that Jesus is coming again? From before the times of our ancestors, everything has remained the same since the world was first created.”

5 They deliberately forget that God made the heavens by the word of his command, and he brought the earth out from the water and surrounded it with water. 6 Then he used the water to destroy the ancient world with a mighty flood. 7 And by the same word, the present heavens and earth have been stored up for fire. They are being kept for the day of judgment, when ungodly people will be destroyed.

8 But you must not forget this one thing, dear friends: A day is like a thousand years to the Lord, and a thousand years is like a day. 9 The Lord isn’t really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent. 10 But the day of the Lord will come as unexpectedly as a thief. Then the heavens will pass away with a terrible noise, and the very elements themselves will disappear in fire, and the earth and everything on it will be found to deserve judgment.

11 Since everything around us is going to be destroyed like this, what holy and godly lives you should live, 12 looking forward to the day of God and hurrying it along. On that day, he will set the heavens on fire, and the elements will melt away in the flames. 13 But we are looking forward to the new heavens and new earth he has promised, a world filled with God’s righteousness.

14 And so, dear friends, while you are waiting for these things to happen, make every effort to be found living peaceful lives that are pure and blameless in his sight.

15 And remember, the Lord’s patience gives people time to be saved. This is what our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you with the wisdom God gave him—16 speaking of these things in all of his letters. Some of his comments are hard to understand, and those who are ignorant and unstable have twisted his letters to mean something quite different, just as they do with other parts of Scripture. And this will result in their destruction.

17 I am warning you ahead of time, dear friends. Be on guard so that you will not be carried away by the errors of these wicked people and lose your own secure footing. 18 Rather, you must grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

All glory to him, both now and forever! Amen.

What does the Bible says about the end of the world?
Is the world going to end?
when?
How does that impact my life?

Is it going to end? - YES, with fire!
psalm 102:25-26
25 Long ago you laid the foundation of the earth
and made the heavens with your hands.
26 They will perish, but you remain forever;
they will wear out like old clothing.
You will change them like a garment
and discard them.

isaiah 66:15-16
15 See, the Lord is coming with fire,
and his swift chariots roar like a whirlwind.
He will bring punishment with the fury of his anger
and the flaming fire of his hot rebuke.
16 The Lord will punish the world by fire
and by his sword.
He will judge the earth,
and many will be killed by him.

When?
  • Unexpected - timing is unknown
Matt 24:36-39
36
“However, no one knows the day or hour when these things will happen, not even the angels in heaven or the Son himself. Only the Father knows.
the decision is in the hand of the Father. Doesnt mean the Son doesnt know.
if you are asking this, you are betraying the parable Son-Father who wants to get married [i am preparing you a place..]

37 “When the Son of Man returns, it will be like it was in Noah’s day. 38 In those days before the flood, the people were enjoying banquets and parties and weddings right up to the time Noah entered his boat. 39 People didn’t realize what was going to happen until the flood came and swept them all away. That is the way it will be when the Son of Man comes.

  • God has a reason - why is God waiting?
2 Pet 3 :8,9
8 But you must not forget this one thing, dear friends: A day is like a thousand years to the Lord, and a thousand years is like a day. 9 The Lord isn’t really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent.
SO, God is not slow. He is waiting for more people!
  • Last Days - beguns when God raised Jesus from the dead. We should stop predicting!
2 Pet 3:3-4
3 Most importantly, I want to remind you that in the last days scoffers will come, mocking the truth and following their own desires. 4 They will say, “What happened to the promise that Jesus is coming again? From before the times of our ancestors, everything has remained the same since the world was first created.”

How does that impact my life?
1 Peter 4 :7-11
7 The end of the world is coming soon. Therefore, be earnest and disciplined in your prayers. 8 Most important of all, continue to show deep love for each other, for love covers a multitude of sins. 9 Cheerfully share your home with those who need a meal or a place to stay.

10 God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another. 11 Do you have the gift of speaking? Then speak as though God himself were speaking through you. Do you have the gift of helping others? Do it with all the strength and energy that God supplies. Then everything you do will bring glory to God through Jesus Christ. All glory and power to him forever and ever! Amen.

The world is gonna end, and we are going to die anyway!
How should be live?
Holy and Godly lives
Pure and blameless lives
Peaceful lives
Clear minded - based on principal!
Self-controlled - no to the NO things!
Love each other
Use your gifts
Take things seriously

You don't want to be Christians that's just good enough to go to heaven.
We need to get prepare for the end of the world, but most importantly we need to prepare others for the ends of the world.

Cookout on the Beach

Pt. Dave Kenney

Luke 5 : 1-11 (NLT)

Why did John write John?

John 20:30-31 (NLT)
He had a reason / purpose :
  • How many miracle in the book of John? NONE. He recorded it as signs, and only 7 signs - would believe the Son of Messiah.
  • Three books he wrote together? He isn't trying to cover what the others are writing. E.q Last Supper. He wrote it differently. It helps to see who Jesus is but different from what others has covered.
What has happened just before this event? The disciples had gone to Jerusalem and had experienced in less than 6 weeks a tumultuous series of events :
  • The Triumphal Entry - start from Lazarus' death, then Palm day
  • the expectation of a new kingdom
  • a betrayal by a trusted friend
  • near arrest
  • denial of Jesus by their leader Peter
  • the agonizing crucifixion of Jesus - He let the Roman catches Him
  • the Resurrection
  • and the appearances of the risen Lord
Many Bible shcolars believe that Chapter 21 was written later as kind of an epilogue by John. It is not wrong or unspiritual to believe this.
1 Later, Jesus appeared again to the disciples beside the Sea of Galilee. This is how it happened. 2 Several of the disciples were there—Simon Peter, Thomas (nicknamed the Twin), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples.

3 Simon Peter said, “I’m going fishing.”

“We’ll come, too,” they all said. So they went out in the boat, but they caught nothing all night.

  • Jesus showed up but not for many people. He didn't go back and get revenge from Pontius Pilatus :)
  • Peter still has influence
Back to finishing
4 At dawn Jesus was standing on the beach, but the disciples couldn’t see who he was. 5 He called out, “Fellows have you caught any fish?”

“No,” they replied.

6 Then he said, “Throw out your net on the right-hand side of the boat, and you’ll get some!” So they did, and they couldn’t haul in the net because there were so many fish in it.

7 Then the disciple Jesus loved said to Peter, “It’s the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his tunic (for he had stripped for work), jumped into the water, and headed to shore. 8 The others stayed with the boat and pulled the loaded net to the shore, for they were only about a hundred yards from shore. 9 When they got there, they found breakfast waiting for them—fish cooking over a charcoal fire, and some bread.

Where have we seen this before?

Why did Jesus do miracles twice?
Wants to remind them that He still has control on their calling as a "fisherman" - common used by teachers to their disciples, not only Jewish but also Romans.
He was using the same common language that they understood.

10 “Bring some of the fish you’ve just caught,” Jesus said. 11 So Simon Peter went aboard and dragged the net to the shore. There were 153 large fish, and yet the net hadn’t torn.

12 “Now come and have some breakfast!” Jesus said. None of the disciples dared to ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. 13 Then Jesus served them the bread and the fish. 14 This was the third time Jesus had appeared to his disciples since he had been raised from the dead.

Jesus' attitude (been executed, humiliated, and raised) is now serving breakfast :
He is still living up, aboutbeing great in God's Kingdom, serving others. Not trying to look important.

How about us? Do we serve, or we expect to be served?
What about the attitude that we have? [clip : the denial of Jesus by Simon Peter]

15 After breakfast Jesus asked Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?

“Yes, Lord,” Peter replied, “you know I love you.”

“Then feed my lambs,” Jesus told him.

16 Jesus repeated the question: “Simon son of John, do you love me?”

“Yes, Lord,” Peter said, “you know I love you.”

“Then take care of my sheep,” Jesus said.

17 A third time he asked him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”

Peter was hurt that Jesus asked the question a third time. He said, “Lord, you know everything. You know that I love you.”

Jesus said, “Then feed my sheep.

18 “I tell you the truth, when you were young, you were able to do as you liked; you dressed yourself and went wherever you wanted to go. But when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and others will dress you and take you where you don’t want to go.” 19 Jesus said this to let him know by what kind of death he would glorify God. Then Jesus told him, “Follow me.”

Seem to be three things here

First - We all been called as "fisher of man"
Love God, Love Others, and Reachout for others

Second - Peter has been totally faithfull, even with all this waving. Peter has been totally unstable, but turned out to be the Rock till the end. Crucified upside down!
John wrote to showed that Peter has been trully restored to Jesus. NOT once, twice. BUT three times. Has been totally forgiven.
This denial part will be forgiven by grace!

Thirdly - Peter thinks he loves Jesus more then any disciples. Turn out not so true! :) The truth of love isn't in the boasting, but in the doing!

20 Peter turned around and saw behind them the disciple Jesus loved (john)—the one who had leaned over to Jesus during supper and asked, “Lord, who will betray you?” 21 Peter asked Jesus, “What about him, Lord?”

22 Jesus replied, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? As for you, follow me.” 23 So the rumor spread among the community of believers that this disciple wouldn’t die. But that isn’t what Jesus said at all. He only said, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?”

24 This disciple is the one who testifies to these events and has recorded them here. And we know that his account of these things is accurate.

25 Jesus also did many other things. If they were all written down, I suppose the whole world could not contain the books that would be written.

Why did John write this?

  • wants to clear the rumour.
  • The nature of human / Peter - v.21 , always live our life compares to others. What about comparing to HIM? Try to loive our journey according to HIS.
  • John got to clear the rumour because he is getting older and people is expecting Jesus to come soon.

Applicaitons:
we have all been called to be a fisher of man

IES is a harvest church - make disciples of Jesus everywhere

Do you serve or do you expect to be served?
Are you an asset of the Kingdom of God or an deficit?

You may be sinned many times, but Jesus is looking for people who is willing to fish for men and feed the lambs.

Don't compare yourself with others.

Focus on being ready and being busy for the Kingdom (NOW)

Supplemental Material
John 21 : 15-17
Many commentaries point out that, in this conversation, two different words are used for "love". In His questions in John 21:15-16, our Lord used agape, which is the Greek word for the highest kind of love, sacrificing love, divine love. Peter always used phileo, which is the love of friend for friend, fondness for another. In John 21:17, Jesus and Peter both used phileo.
However, it is doubtful that we should make too much of an issue over this, because two words are often used interchangeably in the Gospel of John. In John 3:16, God's love for man is agape love; but in John 16:27, it is phileo love. The Father's love for His Son is agape love in John 3:35 but phileo in John 5:20.
Christians are supposed to love one another. In John 13:34, this love is agape love; but in John 15:19, it is phileo love. It would be appear that John used two words as synonyms, whatever fine distinctions there might have been between them. The Bible Exposition Commentary

The Second Donkey

Pt. Dave Kenney

Matthew 17:24-27 (NIV)
24After Jesus and his disciples arrived in Capernaum, the collectors of the two-drachma tax came to Peter and asked, "Doesn't your teacher pay the temple tax?"

25"Yes, he does," he replied.
When Peter came into the house, Jesus was the first to speak. "What do you think, Simon?" he asked. "From whom do the kings of the earth collect duty and taxes—from their own sons or from others?"

26"From others," Peter answered.

"Then the sons are exempt," Jesus said to him. 27"But so that we may not offend them, go to the lake and throw out your line. Take the first fish you catch; open its mouth and you will find a four-drachma coin. Take it and give it to them for my tax and yours."

********

After Jesus and his disciples arrived in Capernaum, the collectors of the two-drachma tax came to Peter and asked, "Doesn't your teacher pay the temple tax?"
"Yes, he does," he replied.

Capernaum

Peter's real name is Simon.
Capernaum is a small city, head city of fishing field. Most of the disciples originate came from Batsyeba [means house of fishing] : Simon, James, John, Matthew, Philip, Nathaniel.. 7(12).
Jesus is the living in Capernaum.
That's why the question pop out.

Temple Tax

a voluntarily tax - every non slave through out Mediterian will sent it.
Rome conquered and destroyed the temple, but keep the tax system but sent it to Rome.
That's why they are questioning Jesus' on paying taxes.

Peter is always quick in giving answer.

When Peter came into the house, Jesus was the first to speak. "What do you think, Simon?" he asked. "From whom do the kings of the earth collect duty and taxes - from their own sons or from others?"
"From others," Peter answered.

Taxes are from others to the King, not the king to the King.
"I don't have to pay cause I am the SON." Not obligated.

Simple Parable - Jesus give answers to Peter.

"Then the sons are exempt," Jesus said to him. 27"But so that we may not offend them, go to the lake and throw out your line. Take the first fish you catch; open its mouth and you will find a four-drachma coin. Take it and give it to them for my tax and yours." Matthew 17: 27 (NIV)

Jesus wants to do it because He doesn't want to offend others.
  • What kind of fish is this?
  • it might have been a tilapia [also called St. Peter's fish]

  • The coins came out - this is one out of two stroy that don't have result.
  • Only Peter's tax was paid. Why? Because Peter is older. Jesus was 30. The others is under 20 years old.

So why this story became important? Why did the Holy Spirit inspired Matthew to tell this story?

1. Jesus is God's son - check out the parable about King and Son.

2. Jesus uses His power
Jesus knows what's going on.
miracle with the coin [pix of coins eating fish]
It was at the right time, right coins : Miracle!
Jesus' miracle is the same kind of miracle. When He says something, it actually happens!

3. Jesus has total control.
Jesus stepped into a boat, crossed over and came to his own town. Some men brought to him a paralytic, lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, "Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven."
[they didn't bring him to be repent, but to get him healed]

At this, some of the teachers of the law said to themselves, "This fellow is blaspheming!"
Knowing their thoughts, Jesus said, "Why do you entertain evil thoughts in your hearts? Which is easier to say, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say,'Get up and walk'? But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on eart to forgive sins..." Then he said to the paralytic, "Get up, take your mat and go home." ANd the man got up and went home. WHen the crowd saw this, they were filled with awe; and they praised God, who had given such authority to men.
Matthew 9:1-8
it's easier to say "your sins are forgiven" - everyone can say, coz there's no evidence.
That's why then Jesus decide to say 'Get up and walk' so crowd knows the power He have. This is the miracle He did to validate.

4. Jesus accepts everyone.
Jesus chose :
Peter - failed as a Rabi
Matthew - tax collector, a crook.
Levi
James and John - disciples of John the Baptist.
Nathanael, Philip, Andrew - no one want then for students.
These are all non star potential Galalean - they talk funny, and people make fun of them.

Applicaitons

Jesus really is God's Son
He is the Son of God. Not just as a role model.
How do you related yourself to Him?

Jesus uses His power - and keep using it. We just need to be reminded.

Jesus has total control
He knows every action. But He doesn't control what you want and what you desire.

Jesus accepts everyone
Not just accepts. BUT He chose, and give value and purpose in people's life.

The Second Donkey

Pt. Dave Kenney

Historical Background
Jesus is going to be riding up [Jericho is at sea level] to Jerusalem through a crowd of Jews on their way to Jerusalem for Passover, one of the greatest if not the greatest feast. A time they remembered God's deliverance from Egypt when God killed Egyptians but spared the Israelites.

Jesus is riding into Jerusalem on a donkey, in fulfillment of a prophecy in Zechariah 9:9
most people walk from place to place, so it's not common. Only people that has money that ride on donkeys.

Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion!
Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem!
See, your king comes to you,
righteous and having salvation,
gentle and riding on a donkey,
on a colt, the foal of a donkey. Zechariah 9:9 (NIV)
crowd who's only looking for the KING, not the King of Peace, but just a King

The Hasmonean Dynasty (the Maccabees)
Ruled from 167 BC until the Romans conquered in 63 BC

Mattathias (the leader of Maccabees), the head of the family, served as a priest (Jewish) in the temple. -revolved against the Celluist? who ruled after Alexander the Great.

Judas (ruled from 166 to 160 BC), nicknamed Maccabeus or the "hammer", was Mattathias' third oldest son.

Jonathan (ruled from 160-142 BC), 4th son of Mattathias, a good worrier and a diplomat. Named high priest.

Simon (ruled from 142-134 BC), 2nd oldest son, ruled into Independence.

John Hyrcanus, Simon's son, ruled from 134-104 BC.
Time of prosperous.
John was the one who died at peace full death.

By 103 BC the throne passed to Alexander Janneus who ruled until 76 BC.

His wife Alexandra, ruled from 10 years after him.

Civil war broke out between her sons Aristobulus II and Hyrcanus II - since they invited Rome Pompeii. Small nation against big empire.

The next day the great crowd that had come for the Feast heard that Jesus was on His way to Jerusalem. They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting,
"Hosanna!"
"Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!"
"Blessed is the King of Israel!" - John 12:12-13 (NIV)

Palm branches were a symbol of the Maccabees
in other words : get out of Roman! - a small symbol of protest.

The other words are from Psalm 118 - songs ascending riding up to Jerusalem.

He is riding a donkey's foal, like the promised messiah.

[a few days earlier] He has raised Lazarus from the dead in Bethany.

Jesus has all the qualification as predicted.
3 days later they were standing in from of the court, executing Him.
Matt 21: 1-11
1As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, 2saying to them, "Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. 3If anyone says anything to you, tell him that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away."

4This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet:
5"Say to the Daughter of Zion,
'See, your king comes to you,
gentle and riding on a donkey,
on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

6The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. 7They brought the donkey and the colt, placed their cloaks on them, and Jesus sat on them. 8A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted,
"Hosanna to the Son of David!"
"Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!"
"Hosanna in the highest!"

10When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, "Who is this?"

11The crowds answered, "This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee."

Expectations of the Crowd [miss guided]

1. Militaristic liberator
  • David - Goliath
  • Mattathias - Maccabeus
  • Jesus - ?
2. Something to happen NOW

3. Return to glory and importance for Israel
They were humble : God chosen people, but was laughed out by the Romans. Now they're going to be prominent again. Unmet expectation when they didn't get it from Jesus, then they started to turned their back from Him.

What does this say to us today? what usually happened when we ask something from Jesus?
  • The answer that we want - if we didn't get it, we don't like it. We should not wonder when we don't get it
  • The answer when we want - God's timing is the best.
We won't get good stuffs, if we decided when we want it.
  • The conditions that we want.
"I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." john 16:33
Are you disappointed about your condition? Have you been crucified yet? Don't expect an easy life.
  • Empty praise
They were singing good words to Jesus, but their hearts was filled with what they can't get. And their hearts was quickly changed when they realized they're not gonna get it.
"Not as long as it fits my heart" attitude, will brings to frustration.

What did Jesus do that day? - Jesus came to died on the cross. Nobody realized that.
Heb 2 : 14-15
14 Because God’s children are human beings—made of flesh and blood—the Son also became flesh and blood. For only as a human being could he die, and only by dying could he break the power of the devil, who had the power of death. 15 Only in this way could he set free all who have lived their lives as slaves to t he fear of dying.

They were looking for someone to conquer the Romans.
Jesus conquered the death, sin and the grave!

They were looking for someone to set up Israel as a kingdom.
Jesus reigns as King of Kings and Lord of Lords!

They were looking for a leader of power who would make them great as a people.
Jesus is at the right hand of God the Father, where He intercedes with God for us!

The Ram

Pt. Dave Kenney
Gen 22:1-19 (NLT)

What was the Old Testament's perspective?
Hebrews 11:17-19 (NLT)

God can be trusted - He don't know how not to be one.
God will always provide - Abraham was the one who come out with the idea of subsitute

What is the New Testament's perspective? [an additional perspective]
Romans 8 : 31-32 (NIV)

Where have we seen this before?

v.2 Mount Morriah in city of Jerusalem. Jewish temple was there. Abt immidiately 80 km away.
v.6
v. 14 Probably the place where Jesus will later be sacrifice.

What is the lesson for us?

Izaac was never at risk here. God was totally against human sacrifice, which used to be practive in Kanan.
Only two things had happened :
* Abraham would obeyed - God will stopped him and substitue
* Abraham would say No - don't know what would happened afterwards.
But the point is, Izaac wasn't at any risk at all!

God ties the old and new together

God was willing
Abraham was a good father, but also an obiedient servant. He said Yes, and trusted everything in His hand.
God also did the same - laid His Son down for me, for us!
So, what God did was far way beyond what Abraham did!

Our God provides - it's about God provide : someone willing to die for us. It's about the cross!
the coke and the gun story.

What is our response?

Acceptance and License

Pt. Dave Kenney

John 8:1-11 [NIV]
1But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them. 3The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group 4and said to Jesus, "Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. 5In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?" 6They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him.

But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. 7When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, "If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her." 8Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground.

9At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. 10Jesus straightened up and asked her, "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?"

11"No one, sir," she said.
"Then neither do I condemn you," Jesus declared. "Go now and leave your life of sin."

1 Cor 5:1-2 [msg]
1-2 I also received a report of scandalous sex within your church family, a kind that wouldn't be tolerated even outside the church: One of your men is sleeping with his stepmother. And you're so above it all that it doesn't even faze you! Shouldn't this break your hearts? Shouldn't it bring you to your knees in tears? Shouldn't this person and his conduct be confronted and dealt with?

"We don't care where you've been, we only care where you are going"

Acceptance - anybody as we are
7Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God. Rom 15:7
when we accept people, we're not doing it with preconditions.

Grace
8For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9not by works, so that no one can boast. Eph 2:8-9

we are not saved by faith, but through faith! Salvation is a gift.
If I received the free grace by faith, means that there's no proof that Jesus died and raised!
If we are not saved by Grace, we will have the opportunity to boast around.
It took much grace for God, to save me and you!

Christian life has no certain life of standard, only one. That is Jesus' life of standard!
Church is a place for people with problems, and want to get out of the problem.

Growth
13until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. Eph 4:13

"IES is a river, not a lake" - has a process of growth
we don't want people to stay, not for the chairs to be occupied, but for us to grow.

Relational
15
Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church. 16 He makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love. Eph 4:15-16

grow like Jesus :
love - 1 Corinthians 13
the fruit of the Spirit - Gal 5:22-23
Now, grow in Life Groups, ministries, etc.

Intentional - we don't do things because it's just traditional/habit, we do things only for a reason to grow!
10For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Eph 2 : 10

Acceptance or License?

Do we really want and can we accept sinners in church?
What do we do with them if they refuse to stop sinning?
What can we learn from these two stories?

First story

We are all sinners and cannot judge others.

"...But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. 7When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, "If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her." 8Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground.
John 8:6b-8 [NIV]
This happened during the Tabernacle, second popular event celebrating ___ and the 10 commandments.
He was writing with his fingers like God wrote on the mount of Sinai [10 commandments].

Forgiveness only comes from Christ
10Jesus straightened up and asked her, "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?"
John 8:10

Included in forgiveness is a challenge to leave sin behind.
"Then neither do I condemn you," Jesus declared. "Go now and leave your life of sin." John 8:11

He forgave her but He told her to stop sinning.
remorse - is feel bad, not enough.
repentance - changing 180 degree from your habit.
you got the forgiveness, now stop doing it again!

Second Story

There are boundaries [of behaviour/activities]

1 Cor 10:23-24
23"Everything is permissible"—but not everything is beneficial. "Everything is permissible"—but not everything is constructive. 24Nobody should seek his own good, but the good of others. [NIV]

23-24Looking at it one way, you could say, "Anything goes. Because of God's immense generosity and grace, we don't have to dissect and scrutinize every action to see if it will pass muster." But the point is not to just get by. We want to live well, but our foremost efforts should be to help others live well. [MSG]

The church needs to be against sinful acts.
1 Cor 5:6-8 [msg] - you can't be a sinful man!
6-8Your flip and callous arrogance in these things bothers me. You pass it off as a small thing, but it's anything but that. Yeast, too, is a "small thing," but it works its way through a whole batch of bread dough pretty fast. So get rid of this "yeast."

The church needs to act against those who refuses to change and grow - Church disciplines
1 Corinthians 5:3-5
"... You must not simply look the other way and hope it goes away on its own. Bring it out in the open and deal with it in the authority of Jesus our Master..."
The goal of the discipline is to save and restore.
No one is in this just only to tell people how to run their lives. It's bigger than that.
But then, you will never grow if you live a sinful life.

1 Corinthians 5:3-5
"...Hold this man's conduct up to public scrutiny. Let him defend it if he can! But if he can't, then out with him! It will be totally devastating to him, of course, and embarrassing to you. But better devastation and embarrassment than damnation. You want him on his feet and forgiven before the Master on the Day of Judgment.
1 Cor 5:1-13 [Msg]
1-2I also received a report of scandalous sex within your church family, a kind that wouldn't be tolerated even outside the church: One of your men is sleeping with his stepmother. And you're so above it all that it doesn't even faze you! Shouldn't this break your hearts? Shouldn't it bring you to your knees in tears? Shouldn't this person and his conduct be confronted and dealt with?

3-5I'll tell you what I would do. Even though I'm not there in person, consider me right there with you, because I can fully see what's going on. I'm telling you that this is wrong. You must not simply look the other way and hope it goes away on its own. Bring it out in the open and deal with it in the authority of Jesus our Master. Assemble the community—I'll be present in spirit with you and our Master Jesus will be present in power. Hold this man's conduct up to public scrutiny. Let him defend it if he can! But if he can't, then out with him! It will be totally devastating to him, of course, and embarrassing to you. But better devastation and embarrassment than damnation. You want him on his feet and forgiven before the Master on the Day of Judgment.

6-8Your flip and callous arrogance in these things bothers me. You pass it off as a small thing, but it's anything but that. Yeast, too, is a "small thing," but it works its way through a whole batch of bread dough pretty fast. So get rid of this "yeast." Our true identity is flat and plain, not puffed up with the wrong kind of ingredient. The Messiah, our Passover Lamb, has already been sacrificed for the Passover meal, and we are the Unraised Bread part of the Feast. So let's live out our part in the Feast, not as raised bread swollen with the yeast of evil, but as flat bread—simple, genuine, unpretentious.

9-13I wrote you in my earlier letter that you shouldn't make yourselves at home among the sexually promiscuous. I didn't mean that you should have nothing at all to do with outsiders of that sort. Or with crooks, whether blue or white-collar. Or with spiritual phonies, for that matter. You'd have to leave the world entirely to do that! But I am saying that you shouldn't act as if everything is just fine when a friend who claims to be a Christian is promiscuous or crooked, is flip with God or rude to friends, gets drunk or becomes greedy and predatory. You can't just go along with this, treating it as acceptable behavior. I'm not responsible for what the outsiders do, but don't we have some responsibility for those within our community of believers? God decides on the outsiders, but we need to decide when our brothers and sisters are out of line and, if necessary, clean house.

God's Word Changes Live

Pt. Dave Kenney

Romans 1:16-17

How do we know God?
creation - not enough
others - sometimes can be confusing

Main ways [to know God]:

The things He said and did

as Christians, you are not under any obligation to follow ALL rules in the Old Testament.
we studied the O.T coz we want to learn about Him and what He did to the group of people at that time.

The things Jesus said and did
John 14:8-11
Jesus is God being accessable to us.
God is wonderful, but also abstract. [that's why He became man]

The instructions that God has for us
2 Tim 3 : 14-17
v. 16 All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness..

Timothy was Paul's emeseries
Timothy was given authority to corrected all the wrong doing in the church of Ephesus.
Paul wrote this for Timothy to read it.
2 Tim -> two things happened after Paul left :
better preacher came along, but then they started to push aside what Paul taught them. They say it doesn't fit the modern life at that time.

what would Paul feel?
He than wrote to them, felt sad about the situation.

For us, we were blessed by what Paul experienced.

An example
2 Kings 22 : 1-2
Josiah's dad was accessioned.
But he changed the nation.

In the New Testament we have the story of Paul
Act 9:3-6
Paul - his Greek/Roman name
Saul - Jewish name.

Paul was 12, need to memorized ALL the names in the Old Testament in order to enter the school.
Paul had an encounter with Jesus and changed, and understood that:
Jesus is the Messiah
  • Because of Messiah has come, God old ways was gone
  • He was the enemy of God, thatz why he change

God's Instructions for us

How can we be changed?

People over Program [POP]

Pt. Dave Kenney

Ezekiel 34 : 7-16 [NIV]

How does God view people?
What Jesus' thinks?

What is our role?

God cares for people - to the level that He even willing to removed the shephard [leaders], when they didn't do their job well.

Jeremiah 29:11-13 [NIV]

Psalm 23:1 [NLT]
when the Lord is MY shephard, everything seems unimportant. This also doesn't mean you can do anything you want.

Exodus 34:6-7a
[NLT]
A picture of a lovingly, marvelling God.

Throughout the Old Testament we see that God cares for people.
He cares for His own people.
He cares for the foreigners and aliens - we need to treat them fairly
He cares for the poor, the widows and the orphans.

ex. Jonah and the big fish.
Niniweh, kota paling bejat. When they conquer a city, they will skinned everyone away. but God give this city a chance to repent. Jonah doesn't want them to repent.

What about Jesus?

Why people hate tax collectors: Romans used to take tax from the Palestine people [since it's part of the Romans] Tax collector will bid, from whom to collect. If the $ bidding > $ jericho they will mark up the amount that need to be collect from the poor.

Luke 1:10 [NLT]

a sycamore-fig tree - 15 meters from the road, very sticky, big leaves, short branches. v.5 - Jesus came by - "..I found you.."

Mark 10:41-45
He gave His life to ransom others

Jesus cares for people

The story about a little boy, who was excited at first finding his first star fish ever, floating in the beaches.
But then after awhile just standing there watching, he ended up with no star fish in his hands.
The dad ask, "why didn't you get any starfish?"
The boy answered, "I was afraid to let go of my other shells in my hands"

"sometimes we focus on doing good things and forgot to look out for the best things.
"

So, what about the church?

The Harvest

Pt. Dave Kenney

John 4:27-42 (NIV)
*The Samaritans and Jews didn't get along well.
Jewish are people that have cast away from God, that's why the Samaritans didn't appreciate the Jewish.
*Jewish men don't talk to a Samaritan, and men don't talk to woman, especially the ones alone in the well at noon.

Principles of the Harvest

Purpose - what are we being called to do?
John 6 :31-34

Jesus already had disciples. - already has His crowd +/- 500 people. He wasn't going there, not trying to increase the size. It's about reaching out and reaching everybody.

Person
Jesus saw her and not her reputation.
He knows what had already been done. You don't have the right to judge which can/can't be saved. You can't seek only the one who is like you.

Priority
John 6 : 31-34
"to do the will of Him who sent me"

The harvest always comes first.
Jesus was not here for the discipling, but to do the Father's will : not letting anyone perish. Let people have their own relationship with God.

Plentiful
Don't mixed up God's timing is different than ours.
John 6:35
Luke 10:2 [NIV] - God is expressed to us, that the harvest is plentiful.

The harvest is limited only by the willingness of the harvesters / works.
If you're in a harvest, you can't take a vacation.

Singleness - God's Perspective

Oyan Simatupang

1 Cor 7:7-9 ; 25-38 (The Message)

Singleness and Marriage are both gifts from God

Singleness is a good state to be in

v.8 ".. singleness might well be the thing for them, as it has been for me.."
v. 26 .. I think it would probably be best to stay just as you are.

Value of being single :
  • Free from the stress marriage brings - v.28
  • Free from the responsibilities that marriage brings - fewer baggage. Philippians 4:6 can be more applicable for single people, too hard for married ones. e.g. John Wesley, actually can please both if there's a submission to God.

For Singles

Satisfaction comes from:

Contentment - learn to be content.
Phil 4 : 11

married/single, will feel content when our identity is ground by God - we are special, we are righteous, etc.

Things that takes your contentment:
  • Speculation - if only this... live in the past.
  • Jealousy
James 3:16 (NLT)
  • Self pity - we need to stop feel sorry for ourselves
Phil 4 : 13 I can do all things through HIM who strengthens me.

What so great about being single?
  • Spontaneous
  • Freedom
  • Flexibility
  • Time alone

Key Question #1 : Are you pursuing other things so vigorously that you are loosing your contentment in God?

Commitment
  • Free to Please God - v. 32
  • Free to Pursue God - v. 34

Key Question #2 : What has been your attention, affection, and attraction?

Caution
  • Purpose - fulfill God's purpose
  • Parents - seeking counsel from your parents
  • Preparation - Do your planning and prepare your fields before building your house. Pr 24:27
27 Finish your outdoor work
and get your fields ready;
after that, build your house.

Key Question #3
: Does this person complement my ministry and passion for Christ?

For Parents
Teach the benefits of marriage and singleness
Christian values over Traditional values

For the rest of us
Our objective is to fulfill God's purpose - marriage can be a deal maker or a deal breaker for God's purpose (e.q John Wesley)
Respect those called to singleness.

God showered us with all the love.
It is effortless for us.

What do women have to do? [to please God] - not a retired women.

The Person She is.

Real Men Make Right Choices

Pt. Dave Kenney

Acts 16 : 25 - 34 (MSG)

Real men make right choices about God - you need to choose.
Joshua 24:15 (NIV)
  • Choose right habits - we're all creature of habits.
if you don't decide to change, there won't be a new habit.
  • Choose spiritual growth - by always doing the right thing ; that's creating habits also.
Our God is a God that forgives, but you won't grow if you can't overcome old bad habits.
You need to be doing the things that leads you grows, not on the activities.
  • Choose to influence others.
You will influence people by the things you choose to do.
Real men make right choices about their single life.
  • Choose honesty - single men tends to have less responsibilities and that makes the opportunity of dishonest to be bigger.
    Matt 5: 16 (NIV)
  • Choose purity - whatever worldly concepts that is going out there, is a NO GO for Christians. Being single doesn't mean you have less responsibilities to about holiness and purity.
    1 Cor 6:16-20 (MSG)

  • Choose others - can choose to do so many activities to be an influence to others. Be used by God to touch others.

Real men make right choices about their marriages.
  • Choose to love - your own wife.
Love is not about feeling. You need to tell it. Emotions is great, but it comes and goes.
  • Choose to build - instead of tearing down.
"..two become one.." if you attack one, you're attacking yourself.
  • Choose to be faithful
the only thing that can break this faithful is the sin of sex, and it's a matter of choice.
in the Old Testament: idolatry = adultery.
Real men make right choices about their children.
Eph. 6 : 4 (NLT)

Choose to discipline :
  • for real violations - not because they embarrasses you.
  • not in anger - you don't want to deliver a message : you got punished because you make daddy angry.
  • not in extreme - not let them remember the discipline, and not the lesson
  • consistently
Choose to teach - have to talk, to listen to them, and spend more time with your kids.
Choose to model - children will follow what you DO, and not what you SAY.
Choose to lead - cause the world is full of trap. You need to lead examples for them.

YOU HAVE BEEN LIED TO – ADOLESCENCE IS A MYTH

Steve Lunn

I am not Pastor Dave. My name is Steve. My wife and I are the ones that:
tell your teens to hug their parents
tell your teens to read God's Word for themselves.
tell your teens that they are not kids, but that they are adults

-disclaimer: I have no teens

But we work with teens and try to understand their culture.

So for WEEK 2 of our IES series, Family-In-The-City, we are address all the parents here…
Because after a decade of working with teenagers, we have come to the conclusion that…

YOU HAVE BEEN LIED TO – ADOLESCENCE IS A MYTH (This is my title)

If you are thinking “awww…I’m not a parent”…..don’t leave! We believe that this is a sermon for everyone….

*primarily for parents who have little kids that will someday be teens (people like me)
*also it’s for parents who have kids that r already teens (hope this sermon is not too late)

*also, there are grandparents/ great grandparents here ….you have little ones/teens in the family.

*also, some of you are teenagers
*also, many of you are young adults (-40) that will 1 day be married (which will probably result in having kids)
*OR you are a young adult that still considers yourself an “adolescent”. (you REALLY need to hear this sermon)

*Finally, in general, we are ALL living in a society where bazillion-dollar industries revolve around teenage culture, and we are ALL part of this society that has been lied to about the abilities of teenagers.

How many of you know a teenager that is taller than you? That has homework you can’t do?
Teens are bigger and smarter than most old people, yet they are labeled “kids”

Let’s start with a POP QUIZ:

The first documented use of the word “teenager” was:

a) Tyndale’s first edition English New Testament in 1526
b) Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet in 1623
c) Benjamin Franklin’s Poor Richard’s Almanac in 1739
d) Theodore Roosevelt’s Strenuous Life speech in 1899
e) A Reader’s Digest issue in 1941

The correct answer is e.

Which means that the concept of a “teenager” has only been around for 70 years.

Think of a normal 15 year old teenager. Is he a kid? Or an adult?

You’d probably say, “Well…neither….he’s in this weird middle stage called “adolescence”.WRONG!

Adolescence is a myth!

Throughout history, there has never been an age category called “adolescence”…until recently. The average 15 year old was regarded as an adult, and was expected to act like one.

Let’s start with God’s Word. These are some of Jesus’ LAST WORDS that he spoke before ascending into heaven. Listen carefully:

“Go make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. And teach them to obey everything I have commanded you...” Matthew 28:19

“You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:8

Who did he say this to? [If you said “disciples” Yes, you are right….. But do you know how old they were?]

Jesus’ disciples were NOT middle-aged men with full-grown beards. They were all teens!!!

In Jesus’ day, every Jewish kid –even girls - goes to the synagogue and learns to memorize the Torah til age 12. Girls leave school at this age and go get married. The boys learn the rest of the Hebrew Testament until age 14

When a rabbi passed thru their town, they might ask the Rabbi “May I follow you?” If bright enough, the rabbi accepts him as a disciple. If not, rabbi encourages him to pursue a trade.

Jesus broke the norm by finding some 14-year olds mending the nets for their dad, and saying “Come, follow me”. Notice this: when he called them, the disciples were all around 14 or 15!

[Peter & Jesus’ Temple Tax. Matt 17:27]

Jesus has 3 years of public ministry, teaching these teenaged disciples. And right before his ascension, he gathers his 17 year olds for the last time and says….

“You are in charge of reaching the world” (huh?)

That was 2000 years ago.

If you get a dozen 17-year olds together now, what would you expect? Trouble!

What happened???

In this last century, society’s expectations of the typical teenager have become soooooo low; that nowadays adolescents are only expected to:

1. get good grades, and

2. stay out of trouble. (I decided not to show the video…”What are your parents’ top 2 expectations of you?”

If you can just do these 2 things (good grades/stay out of trouble), everyone is happy. You are considered a “good” teenager if you can just meet these 2 simple criteria.

Society’s expectations of the modern teenager are loooow.

John Maxwell tells of a study done on monkeys. In the study, a group of monkeys were locked in a room with a pole at the center. Some nice, ripe bananas were placed at the top of the pole. When a monkey would begin to climb the pole to get a banana, he would be knocked off with a blast of water from a fire hose. Each time a monkey would climb, off he would go, until all the monkeys had been knocked off repeatedly, thus learning that the climb was hopeless. It was then observed that the monkeys would pull down any monkey trying to climb. When researchers would introduce a new monkey to the group and he tried to climb the pole, the others would pull him down. One by one, each monkey was replaced with a new monkey and the scene was repeated until there were no monkeys left in the room that had actually experienced the fire hose. Still, none of these new monkeys would climb the pole. They pulled each other down each time one decided to give it a go. Not one monkey in the room knew why, but none were allowed to get the bananas.

Society labels you a “typical teen” …and if you try anything exceptional like

*starting a web business ….. they PULL YOU DOWN and say “you’re too young to do that!”

*or writing a book ….. they PULL YOU DOWN and say “you’re too young to do that!”

*or creating a ministry for orphans. ….. they PULL YOU DOWN and say “you’re too young to do that!”

*or, like me, want to get married @ 18. ….. they PULL YOU DOWN and say “you’re too young to do that!”

Even other teens will pull them down.

Even well-meaning parents will pull them down. (-James Lee basketball:)

teachers vs. students bball game.
16 yr old James. He was more athletic, but my arms were longer. I knocked him down on pavement.

At halftime. We’re way up. His dad said to me– “He’s just a BOY! Go easy on him!”

I asked James, “Your dad said to go easy on you…what do you think? “Bring it on, mr lunn”

He got trounced. but had the game of his life.

Every rebound, he had to fight. Every shot, he could expect contact

dad like monkey pulling him down. Low expectations, labeling him as “just a boy”

but James knew he was a man. James knew if he wanted to excel, he had to RAISE THE STANDARD himself!

He chose to do hard things.

The problem with society’s low expectations, is that you get low results.

This is the Power of Expectations…

1. Grade 1a vs 1b.

Experiments on teenagers. Middle school students (ages 12-14) were divided randomly into 2 classes. The teachers were told that one class was made up of the best and brightest students at the school and that the other class was made up of the slower to average students. With that, the teachers began to teach….and guess what happened?

ALL of the teachers’ interactions with the students were tainted by their expectations. When the teachers worked with a student in the “bright” class, they persisted with the student until he or she found the answer. But when a student in the “slow” class didn’t find that answer right away, the teachers moved on to another student. When a student in the bright class struggled, the teachers brushed if off, saying that the student was just having an “off day.” But when the students in the slow class struggled, it was just because they were slow.

Don’t miss this: statistically the classes were exactly the same. The only difference was in what their teachers expected of them. Soon, the students began to meet those expectations. The “best and brightest” class began to excel, and the “slower” class began to lag behind.

That is the power of expectations. Low expectations yields low results.

Here’s a story that most of us in Indonesia can relate to.

2. It’s a tale of two teenage girls. Both these teenagers lived with my wife and I, in our house, at one time in their lives. Both were the same age – 16. But the expectations placed on them by their parents had totally different results when they were living with us.

Here are the results:

Jojo was spoiled, Didi was obedient.

caught with drugs

- Never come back drunk; always sober & smiling.

confiscated makeup

- Let her go anywhere she wants cuz I know she’s responsible.

never made her bed.

- Made MY bed!

Talked back

- Obeyed every word.

thought like a child

- Thought like an adult

Kim’s cousin

-Our maid

What's different? It's the expectations placed on each of them when they were growing up!!

JoJo, even as a teen, was only expected to do things that little kids do – 1. study hard. 2. Stay out of trouble.

Didi was expected to do adult things – earn money and send it home to help her little siblings go to school.

These expectations placed on them ended up with hugely different results during their older teenage years. (if Joanna had wanted to get married at 16, I’d splutter. Cuz she’s immature. If Dewi wanted to get married at 16, I’d be happy for her. Cuz she’s mature.)

3. Tasia’s Teenage-sitter

2 sisters come to church. 14 yr & 13 yr old.

We say “wassup.” “Hey, who’s your friend?” “That’s our maid”

I’m thinking “what…? You’re 14….and you have a 16 year old maid who’s half your size?”

Why is it that these 2 girls are not expected to be mature enough to handle themselves, and this tiny girl here is expected to be mature enough to handle herself AND 2 other teenagers??

What’s going on??

The result of low expectations: often result in a kidult.(not an adult; not a kid; but a kidult) 25-year olds who stay at home and play video games all day. You know any of those?

The expectations on them (either from themselves or from others), mold them into the type of person they are supposed to become.

Up until a hundred years ago, the expectations of teenagers were much higher.

200 years ago. David– (born in 1801). 10 year old – joined the navy. 12 year old, after battle, assigned to takePrisoners back to US. Uncle made him captain of ship. The captured British captain had a problem with taking orders from a 12-year old, so he announced that he was going below to get his pistols (out of respect for his position, he had been allowed to keep to keep them). David promptly sent him word that if he stepped foot on deck with his pistols, he would be shot and thrown overboard. The captain stayed below.

This 12 year old had some very adult-sized expectations placed on him! And he was successful!

David Farragut went on to become the admiral of the entire US navy.

Some kind of genius? No! 12 year olds have the ability to do these kinds of things!

250 years ago. George–(born in 1732). Surveyor at 17. Not office job. Manly frontier work. $100,000 a year. Not genius. Just an average young man. Became 1st president of US. George Washington.

Just 100 years ago. Husband Clarence + wife Lydia + baby. Arkansas to Cali (Cherry Valley). Covered wagon . Sandstorm. Had guns. Hunt for food. Bought land. Build own cabin & smokehouse.

Man – 18, wife – 16.

Kim’s Great Grandparents.

Teenagers used to be adults! What happened???

These examples shock us here in 2009, but that’s because we view our lives through an EXTRA social category called “adolescence”. If you said “adolescence” to someone 100 years ago, they’d be like “huh??”

All through history, there have only been 2 categories of age: childhood and adulthood

Nowadays, this artificial zone of “adolescence” has been created. A zone where young men and women are no longer children, yet they are:

1. forced to study (by law), and

2. discouraged from working

So of course, getting married and having a family and becoming a contributing member of society is delayed.

Thus, the “teenager” was invented, an unfortunate creature who has all the desires and abilities of an adult, but none of the freedoms or responsibilities.

Teens are pulled back down only by the myth of adolescence and society’s low expectations.

But you know what God says about these young adults??

“Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith, and in purity.

1 Timothy 4:12

“Brothers, stop thinking like children. In regard to evil be infants, but in your thinking be adults.

1 Corinthians 14:20

Unfortunately, many teens end up just the opposite! In their thinking they are like infants. And in regard to evil, they are advanced far beyond their years!

It’s time to turn that around.

It’s time for a change: it’s time for teens to rebel against low expectations.

It’s time for teenagers to think and act like godly adults.

Today, there ARE teenagers who are ignoring the monkeys of society, and choosing to act like adults:

Michael Sessions

Two months before, Michael was not old enough to vote. But on a November night in 2005, in a City Council chamber packed with reporters from as far away as Japan and Russia, he was sworn in as mayor of Hillsdale, Michigan.

In his only speech of the night, Michael thanked his family and friends. “I’m honored to have the opportunity to serve as mayor of Hillsdale. I am prepared to serve for each and every one of you,” he said.

Michael who turned 18 in September, was too young to get his name on the ballot, and had to run for mayor as a write-in candidate — meaning voters had to remember his name and add it to the ballot by hand in order to support him. Young Mr. Sessions launched his campaign, just one month before the election, with the $700 he made from his summer job.

Sessions was awarded one vote that had been in question by the elections office, which read simply "the 18 year old running for mayor"

Zach Hunter.

Three years ago, Zach Hunter was confronted with the painful truth about modern day slavery: 27 million people are in slavery around the world today, half of them children. He’s been on a campaign to change that ever since.

Zach is now 15 years old. And he explains. “It was Black History Month, and we were learning about slavery in the US. and I had thought, ‘Man, if I had lived back then, I would have done something to help them. I would have tried to end slavery and fight for equality.’ And then when I found out there was still something to do, I felt like I couldn’t just stand by like I agreed with it.”

When he was just 12 years old, Zach launched his ministry, Loose Change to Loosen Chains, raising more than $8,500 in his school and youth group to rescue victims of slavery and oppression.

He used to suffer from anxiety attacks, but now has spoken to more than half a million people at live events, appeared on national TV, written 2 books, and even delivered a speech at the White House.

In his books,he encourages his generation that they can make a difference in the world, even as teenagers.

“We can make a difference in the lives of slaves. It doesn’t really matter how young we are. It doesn’t matter if we have physical, mental, or emotional disabilities. It doesn’t matter the color of our skin or where we’re from. Anybody can make a difference and be a voice for the voiceless.”

Zach’s life verse:

“Learn to do right!

Seek justice,

Encourage the oppressed.

Defend the cause of the fatherless,

Plead the case of the widow.

Isaiah 1:17

Zach explains. “It doesn’t really get much more straightforward than that. It’s a call to action from God.”

These are just 2 examples of teens who are rebelling against low expectations. 18-year old Mayor Michael Sessions, and 15 year old Zach Hunter.

Teens are bigger and smarter than most old people, yet they are labeled “kids”

I asked our IES teens what they thought of being labeled “a kid”….

75% said they resent it

20% said they don’t care

5% said they like it.

Most teens don’t WANT to be kids. They WANT to be adults. They have the bodies of adults. They have the minds of adults. Throughout history they have been adults. Jesus expected his teenage disciples to be adults. But why aren’t today’s teens expected to adults?

Teens, are you acting like an adult, or a kid?

Parents and future-parents, do you expect your teens to act like adults, or kids?

Everyone else, let’s be a society that helps teens reach their God-given potential!

What I want you to know:

If the teens at IES would recognize that society is wrong to pull them down…

and if they let God’s Word and all of history govern their sense of what they are capable of, they would be a force this world could no longer ignore.
